Libs outraged at Cohen’s smear of conservatives, but not why you might think

As far as where he should put it is concerned, tweeters have a pretty good idea.

Now, granted, people have come to expect crap from Cohen:

But the WaPo opinion columnist has managed to pull off the impressive feat of pissing off just about everyone across the political spectrum with his most recent offering. For this column, Cohen “took the Internet Express out to Iowa, surveying its various newspapers, blogs and such to see how [Gov. Chris Christie] might do in the GOP caucuses.” What he concluded was that a moderate like Christie would fare poorly in Iowa thanks to the state’s “cultural conservatives.” And here’s why:

Today’s GOP is not racist, as Harry Belafonte alleged about the tea party, but it is deeply troubled — about the expansion of government, about immigration, about secularism, about the mainstreaming of what used to be the avant-garde. People with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York — a white man married to a black woman and with two biracial children. (Should I mention that Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, used to be a lesbian?) This family represents the cultural changes that have enveloped parts — but not all — of America. To cultural conservatives, this doesn’t look like their country at all.

Attention, people with “conventional views”: Multiracial families and lesbianism make you physically ill.

Sorry, but what the hell?

The day is young, yet.

It’s true:

Nice going, Richard.

It’s easy to see why Cohen’s column has conservatives so disgusted. After all, we’re once again being told that being conservative automatically makes us racist and homophobic. But what about the Left? What’s got so many liberals upset enough to demand that Cohen gets the boot?

There’s even a petition up at Change.org:

From the petition linked above:

Richard Cohen’s columns are filled with racist assumptions and statements that have no place at The Washington Post. The latest instance is his assertion that the “conventional view” is to gag at interracial relationships (nevermind that 87% of Americans disagree). He previously wrote that a fear of Trayvon Martin was “understandable” given the way he was dressed at the time of his death. These views are reprehensible, and The Washington Post should not provide Richard Cohen with a platform to espouse his racist beliefs. Tell Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post – It’s time to fire Richard Cohen.

But why? Many of the angry liberals seem to think that Cohen himself feels like gagging when he sees multiracial families.

http://twitter.com/#!/astrocanine/status/400303165804773376

But, frankly, that’s not what he wrote.

Poor word choice, perhaps. But those words are nonetheless being misinterpreted by the Left to suit the “Richard Cohen is racist” narrative. Speaking of which:

Exactly. Liberal media outlets like Gawker have made falsely bashing conservatives their bread and butter. If they’re angry with Cohen, it’s certainly not because he made “conventional” conservatives look like backward racist homophobes.

Tough call. If anything, Cohen’s column has reinforced one of the Left’s most cherished demonization tactics.

Exactly.

Wheelchair-bound veteran busts into the Korean War Memorial [photo]

Yesterday, Puerto Rican Korean War veterans bypassed shutdown-imposed barricades to gain access to the Korean War memorial on the National Mall. It appears the National Park Service put those barricades back up — mustn’t let veterans visit memorials during a government shutdown! This afternoon, one determined veteran is refusing to take “no” for an answer. Good for him.

A lot of energy is being expended to keep putting those barricades up. What exactly is the point again?

Delusional hubris: Obama claims to know more about Judaism than any other president ever

No, for reals. He actually said that. President Obama actually said that he knows more about Judaism than any other President, because he read about it. Also, some of his best friends are Jewish. And he said this with what we have to assume was a straight face!

This is NOT a parody: 'Obama…Stressed He Probably Knows About Judaism More than Any Other President — http://t.co/17iHrk4T

— Dan Senor (@dansenor) May 30, 2012

More from The Weekly Standard.

In the meeting, Obama reportedly boasted about his knowledge of Judaism, telling the leaders that he thinks he knows more “about Judaism” than all past presidents. He said he gained this knowledge of Judaism from reading.

Obama … stressed he probably knows about Judaism more than any other president, because he read about it,” Haaretz reports. “[He] wondered how come no one asks Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner or Senate minority leader Mitch McConnel [sic] about their support to Israel.”

Similarly, he said to the group, “I [am] not going to tell you again how I even feel about Israel, but why [are] we still talking about it?”

He then suggested that he should not be questioned about his commitment to the Jewish state because “all his friends in Chicago were Jewish – and at the beginning of his political career he was accused of  being a puppet of the Israel lobby,” Haaretz reports.

Sheesh, people, why the suspicion? He used the old “some of my best friends” trope and everything! And he read a book. Not his own book…not even his own wife has read that…but he has read some books. Case. Closed.

So, he doesn’t know anything about the atrocities committed against the Jewish in death camps, but he totally knows Judaism the bestest of the best. Because, books. Silly rubes just probably don’t understand the “nuance” of reading. We also wonder which books he has read. Perhaps the books he has read are like the pastor to whom he listens? Or maybe they were the same kind of books he read to learn to speak “Austrian?”

Obama wonders why nobody asks other politicians about support of Israel?? Probably because it's the President that handles foreign policy

— Kevin Ecker (@kevinecker) May 30, 2012

No, no. It’s bigotry, natch. See, it was further reported that President Obama went on to say that people thinking that he isn’t a friend of Israel is just all a result of Republican “bigotry.” Now seeing and reacting to the Obama administration’s atrocious record as pertains to Israel is bigotry. It seems truth is now a “dog whistle” code word.

Once again, Twitter users weigh in to provide another Teachable Moment ™. The President has acted stupidly.

Obama knows Judaism better than rabbis, Catholicism better than the pope, and Nazi death camps better than the Poles.

— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) May 30, 2012

Bono praises capitalism with boom-worthy quote; Ondrasik: Because, duh

U2’s Bono has found what he’s looking for … and it’s free enterprise!

Amen.

The singer scored with those boom-worthy remarks. Sen. Rubio, John Stossel, author Brad Thor and other Twitter users rightly praised Bono:

http://twitter.com/#!/politicsofamy/status/367501596969537536

Truth. Bono has often praised President George W. Bush, and evangelicals, for their life-saving work in Africa.  Unlike the unhinged Left and lapdogs in the media who still refuse to acknowledge Bush’s long history of initiatives in Africa.

Five for Fighting’s John Ondrasik has a small bone to pick, however.

Ding, ding, ding! It is a little disheartening that praise for capitalism and understanding  that free enterprise is a great force for good is news. Because, duh. Seriously.

And some exit, non-related snark as only Twitter can bring it:

Heh. Perhaps he does. And is stimulating the economy by buying new pairs consistently. Achtung Baby? More like capitalism, baby!
